                               README FOR

THE GOLDEN AGE OF THE UNITED
                      PROVINCES OF THE NETHERLANDS:
THE END OF THE PAX HISPANICA

                               A SCENARIO
                           FOR CIVILIZATION II

                          BY ALLARD H.S. HFELT
                     -=============================-

IMPORTANT:
----------

FOR USE ONLY WITH THE FANTASY WORLDS (v2.7.81) CIV II ADD-ON DISK.

It cannot and will not work with any older version... See under
Installation for more details.

Because I didn't want this scenario to be of an undownloadable largeness, I
did NOT include many sound effects, thus the game will use the standard Civ-
sound effects, which may give very strange and illogical effects.
JUST TURN YOUR SOUNDS OFF or make your own ones and feel free to add them to
the ZIP file and distribute it. Thank you very much.

A later version of this scenario will perhaps make use of sounds, so keep
looking for new versions of this scenario.

Andrew Hoekzema's and my homepage contains all scenarios created so far by me
and always the latest versions of them, so please visit:
http://civilization.gamestats.com/aa/

A scenario by Allard H.S. Hfelt (see my homepage). If copied, this
.ZIP file MUST contain all the files it originally contained (as described
later in this text file). I am not responsible for any damage,
malfunction, etc. this scenario may cause. They contain icons created by
myself or from many places on the Internet. You may use any of my units
(marked with AHS) in your scenario, and probably most of the other units,
but I cannot guarantee that, for they aren't created by me. Thanks to you
all. See the Credits for more info about this.

Credits:
--------
Thanks for the ones who created the icons I used in this scenario:
-Harlan Thompson for his marvellous mountains.
-Jess Balsinde a great deal of help and many units.
-Jess Muoz for creating many good units.
-Alex the Magnificent for some great units.

Playtesting:
-Tatu Ahponen <tatuahpo@pelu.jns.fi>
-Michael Jeszenka <michael@jeszenka.com>
Thank you very much

Goals:
------
Your goal as the Dutch player is to conquer and hold at least all of present-day
Netherlands. If you fail this, you will lose. As Spanish, your goals lie higher.
To satisfy Philip II, you should pacify any rebellious city in the Low Lands, and
Philip would be very happy if you would try conquering some extra cities.

Installation:
-------------
This scenario is designed for version 2.7.81 (the version of the Fantasy Worlds
scenario disk), and is not playable with version 2.62 (the version of the
Conflicts in Civilization scenario disk).
It should also work fine under MGE.

With Fantasy scenario disk: Just make a directory in your \civ2\scenario
directory named "REPUBLIC". Unzip all files into this directory. Start Civ2,
select "Begin Scenario", go to \civ2\scenario\REPUBLIC\ and highlight
REPUBLIC.SCN

Background Information:
-----------------------
In this scenario, the standard Civ game has been completely modified...
There is no scientifical research. After all, the area covered is too small
to have a significant influence on technology. However, every 10-20 turns
you will receive new techs allowing better units.

The scenario is designed for Emperor level, and is designed for the human
player to be only Dutch or Spanish. Perhaps German (but not tested, and
not designed for it).

NOTE:
DO NOT SELL's are special improvements used to balance gameplay.
Gameplay will ruined if you sell these. However, if you desperately need
some money, selling this would be a great way to make money. Of course,
this will costs your city valuable resources. You've got to sacrifice
something to make money...

A note about Research
---------------------
The area this scenario plays in has had quite some influence on research
in the history of the world. However, this is negligable over the time-span
this scenario deals about.
Therefore, NO TECHNOLOGICAL RESEARCH is allowed. Events will give you new
units and/or buildings every 10-20 turns.
Do not try to research technologies!

History & other historical information
--------------------------------------
I have included 3 Microsoft Word 97 Documents.
- In SONGS.DOC I have typed out and translated some famous dutch songs
about this period.
- HISTORY.DOC gives a chronological overview from 1477 to the 1800s. It is
also available on my homepage, if you go to the Holland scenario page.
- STORY.DOC tells about the Siege of Alkmaar (the city I live in :-) ). A
very interesting story, although a bit Christian (it came from some kind of
a Christian site).
